OpenAI Brings Back Five-Hour Usage Limit for ChatGPT Plus Users

OpenAI is restoring the five-hour usage limit for ChatGPT Plus users across Codex and ChatGPT Work starting August 25, 2026 again.

OpenAI is bringing back a five-hour usage limit for ChatGPT Plus subscribers using Codex and ChatGPT Work, ending a temporary period when users only had to follow a weekly usage cap.

The five-hour limit returns on August 25 and will apply across both Codex and ChatGPT Work for Plus accounts. Once users reach either the five-hour limit or their weekly allowance, they will need to wait for the usage window to reset or buy additional credits.

Thibault ā€œTiboā€ Sottiaux, OpenAI’s engineering lead for Codex and ChatGPT, announced the change and explained that the shorter limit helps the company manage compute demand while keeping the overall weekly allowance relatively generous.

He also said the limit can help Plus users avoid using their entire weekly allocation too quickly, which has caused confusion for people who unexpectedly reached their cap early in the week.

OpenAI temporarily removed the five-hour restriction over the past several weeks, while the company also reset weekly limits early on some occasions as Codex and ChatGPT Work reached new usage milestones.

For now, OpenAI plans to keep the five-hour limit disabled for its $100 and $200 Pro subscriptions over the coming months. The company did not announce any changes for Enterprise or Edu customers, which continue to use a separate credit-based usage system.
