OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says artificial intelligence still has not reached its “iPhone moment,” arguing that the industry has built many of the technical pieces but has not yet created a product that changes everyday computing in the same way Apple changed smartphones.
Speaking with podcaster David Senra, Altman compared the current AI market with smartphones before the iPhone arrived, when devices from Palm, Nokia, and Windows Mobile already offered many advanced features but remained difficult for mainstream users to adopt.
Altman said the missing piece is largely a product problem because AI companies have not yet found an interface that makes the technology feel natural enough for daily use. He also admitted that he expected AI to disrupt businesses and the wider economy much faster after GPT-4 arrived in 2023.

“The economy just has so much inertia,” Altman said, explaining that people continue using familiar products and buying from companies they already know even when newer technology becomes available.
Altman says OpenAI needs to focus more
Altman also pointed to a lesson associated with Steve Jobs, who often spoke about saying no to good ideas so Apple could focus on a smaller number of important products. Altman admitted that he has struggled with the same discipline at OpenAI.
The company has already dropped projects including Sora and its Atlas browser to move talent and computing resources toward higher-priority products such as Codex. Altman said OpenAI ultimately wants to operate more like a platform with a unified interface and API.
Looking ahead, Altman expects AI to drive what he called the biggest wave of small-business creation yet, while also creating demand for businesses built around human, physical, and non-technological experiences.
He also warned that AI development brings serious questions around control, concentrated power, and safety as models become more capable, which means OpenAI will face harder decisions about when to slow or delay future systems.
