Apple has started upgrading some unshipped Mac mini orders from the M4 model to the new M6 version at no extra cost, giving affected buyers newer hardware without changing the price they originally paid. Since the new Mac mini now starts at $899 in the United States, customers who ordered the previous $799 model are effectively getting the newer machine for $100 less than its current starting price.
Apple told affected customers that the change would happen automatically because their original Mac mini had not yet shipped.
“Thank you for your recent Mac order. We know you’re looking forward to receiving your purchase. As you may know, Apple recently announced the new Mac mini. Since your order has yet to ship, we automatically upgraded you to the new Mac mini at no additional cost.”
Some customers also received earlier delivery estimates after the upgrade, including one buyer whose expected arrival moved from October to September. However, another customer said the automatic change pushed their delivery back by several weeks, creating problems because they needed the computer for school and were not given a choice to keep the original order.

Apple announced the new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chip options this week, while the new Mac Studio now offers M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations. Both models are available for pre-order and will launch on Tuesday, September 22.
