GPT-6 Astra Release Today? OpenAI’s Next Major AI Model Is Almost Here

OpenAI could release its next major AI model, Astra, as soon as today, September 3, with growing signs suggesting that the long-awaited model is close to launch. Astra is widely expected to represent the next major generation after GPT-5.6, although OpenAI has not officially confirmed the GPT-6 name or a September 3 release date.

The latest speculation gained momentum after reports claimed that the model identifier gpt-6-astra produced unusual behavior through OpenAI’s API. The reported response differs from what completely invalid model names return, raising speculation that OpenAI has already prepared Astra inside its infrastructure ahead of release.

OpenAI has already cleared Astra for release

The timing also lines up with OpenAI’s latest official Astra update. On September 1, the company said it had completed additional evaluations and believes Astra’s safeguards sufficiently reduce the risk of severe harm for release under its Preparedness Framework. OpenAI added that it plans to make Astra available “soon.”

Astra has also become the first OpenAI model classified as reaching the company’s Critical cybersecurity capability threshold. With suitable tools and access, OpenAI says the model can identify previously unknown security vulnerabilities in well-protected systems and develop ways to exploit them without a person directing every step.

That capability has led OpenAI to introduce stronger monitoring and safeguards. Access to Astra’s most advanced cybersecurity abilities will initially remain limited to selected testers, with broader defensive access planned through its Daybreak Blue program.

Is GPT-6 Astra actually launching today?

For now the launch remains unconfirmed. OpenAI has publicly acknowledged Astra and confirmed that its release is approaching, while the reported API activity adds another clue that deployment preparations are underway.

OpenAI also has not confirmed whether Astra will officially carry the GPT-6 branding. If the model does arrive today, its launch details, availability, pricing, benchmarks and final public name should provide a much clearer picture of where OpenAI’s next generation of AI models is heading.
