Spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 finale follow. Dillard dies because his campaign against Negan leaves him unable to accept the one thing the finale insists on: Manhattan cannot be rebuilt through revenge and control.
His death is not simply a villain’s punishment. Dillard starts the season as a person Negan attempts to protect, then turns into the person most determined to make Negan suffer. By “Tenebrae,” the conflict has narrowed to a painful final confrontation between two people who once trusted each other.

Dillard’s anger begins with Negan’s choices
Season 3 does not introduce Dillard as a conventional enemy. He begins as the bartender with his own fragile world above the bar, and he forms a connection with Negan. But Dillard also has an unusually deep attachment to the walkers he keeps nearby. When Negan kills those walkers because he sees them as a threat, Dillard experiences it as a personal loss.

Why he cannot let the conflict end
Dillard has more than a tactical goal in the finale. He wants Negan to admit that their bond meant nothing and to repeat the kind of violence that has defined Negan’s past. The demand that Maggie or Negan die is designed to make recovery impossible, even if the community survives.
That is why Negan’s hesitation matters. He has every reason to fight Dillard, yet he does not treat the final moments as a triumph. The episode keeps the emotional cost visible because Dillard was not an unknown adversary. He was someone Negan failed to reach before anger became power.
How Dillard dies
Maggie saves Negan when Dillard is about to kill him with Lucille, severing Dillard’s arm in the struggle. Dillard is mortally wounded, and Negan remains with him as he dies. He later reanimates, closing the story with an image that connects him to the walkers he had mourned and protected.
The sequence also marks how far Maggie and Negan have moved from their starting point. The Season 3 premiere established their tentative attempt at cooperation; the finale makes them act together when it matters most.
What the next episode still needs to answer
Apple is not the distributor of Dead City. AMC has not published a Season 4 renewal announcement in the sources for this article, so Dillard’s death should not be used to predict a future season.
