The decades-old secret is that Archie fathered Mary with Iris Vetner and then rejected the daughter he had never publicly acknowledged. Omar’s murder is connected because he overheard Mary confronting Archie and planned to expose the story, giving Mary a second reason to kill.

Tommy and Tuppence uncover that connection through records, a death certificate and Mary’s reaction to a staged allergy scare. What looked like two separate attacks becomes one chain of evidence about family, humiliation and an attempted cover-up.

Iris Vetner’s death certificate identifies the old secret

A document Omar requested leads Tommy and Tuppence to Iris Vetner. Her name, and the iris imagery associated with her, helps them understand that Mary is not simply a member of the theater company caught near a crime. DNA results prove that Archie was her father.

Mary had confronted Archie hoping for recognition. Instead, he treated her cruelly and prepared to make her look responsible for the stolen pearls. Archie had hired inexperienced investigators because he wanted a manageable inquiry that would support his version of events.

Archie’s kiss becomes the first murder weapon

Mary knows about Archie’s severe peanut allergy. She sabotages his EpiPens and adds peanut oil to the lipstick Gilda wears onstage, turning Gilda’s kiss into the delivery system. The theatrical setting lets Mary hide a deeply personal killing inside a public performance.

The missing pearls support Archie’s planned frame-up rather than Mary’s motive. They are eventually found concealed in the cheap hand soap he handed out. That discovery strips away another false lead and shows how far Archie was willing to go to control the scandal.

Omar dies because he can expose the daughter connection

Omar overhears the confrontation between Mary and Archie. His knowledge of the argument, combined with his interest in the registry record, could immediately direct suspicion toward Mary after Archie’s death. She kills him with the critics’ award before he can publish or share what he knows.

Tommy and Tuppence stage a fake allergic reaction involving Mary to force the family link into the open. The trick is theatrical, but the conclusion rests on the documentary clues they have assembled. Mary tries to flee and is stopped before police arrest her.

The old secret therefore connects every part of the case. It supplies Mary’s motive, explains why Archie tried to direct blame toward her and gives Omar the information that costs him his life. The second murder is not a separate escalation. It is the cover-up required by the first.

The case is closed, although the tampering with Aunt Ada’s alcohol opens a new threat. Which clue gave Mary away for you? Share your answer in the comments.
