Grand Theft Auto VI will let players decide how much Jason and Lucia invest in their romance, but it will not let the two protagonists completely end their criminal partnership. Their emotional relationship can change through play while the central story keeps them connected.
Wccftech reports, citing comments from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, that players can avoid developing the romantic side of the relationship. Even then, Jason and Lucia remain partners in crime for most of the game rather than splitting into separate storylines.
The choice affects how the pair behave together, not whether both characters exist in the campaign. Spending time on shared activities can strengthen their bond and unlock affectionate interactions. Ignoring that side of the game leaves them as collaborators, which gives players control over tone without allowing a breakup to dismantle the main narrative.

The relationship supports the story
Rockstar’s approach separates an optional gameplay system from a fixed story requirement. Jason and Lucia can have a warmer or more distant relationship depending on player choices, but missions can still depend on them working together. That avoids forcing every player into the same romance while preserving the two-lead structure shown in trailers.
It also means a low relationship state should not be read as permission to remove one protagonist from the campaign. The report does not establish alternate partners, a permanent separation ending or a route that turns the story into a solo adventure. More specific consequences may not be clear until the full game is available.
MacObserver’s guide to the GTA 6 extended presentation covers the longer gameplay showcase that introduced more of Leonida and the game’s systems. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists a November 19, 2026 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The practical takeaway is simple: romance is a player choice, partnership is part of the plot. Rockstar is giving players room to shape Jason and Lucia’s everyday connection without allowing that choice to break the story the studio built around them.
