The long wait for consolidation in the streaming market is finally ending. Warner Bros. Discovery is preparing to officially join forces with its buyer next week. When it does, the media landscape will look very different. The newly formed company will take the name Skydance. As part of this massive deal, both HBO Max and Paramount+ are going to merge into one platform. This brings together some of the biggest movie franchises and television shows into a single place for viewers.

David Ellison confirms a combined app with 200 million subscribers

The CEO of the new company, David Ellison, recently shared the Skydance name on social media. He also made it clear what happens next for the current streaming apps. Instead of running competing services side by side, Skydance plans to fold everything into a single application.

If regulators give the final green light, this combined service will boast roughly 200 million subscribers right out of the gate. We do not know what the combined app will cost or what name it will go by. Skydance has not shared those pricing details yet, but the company did confirm it wants to preserve the core value of its most popular networks.

Ellison noted that the HBO name has a long history of quality television. Because of this, HBO will likely stick around as a prominent category or hub within the larger Skydance app. This ensures fans can still find their favorite premium shows easily.

Subscribers will have to wait for an official launch timeline

Warner Bros. Discovery and its new owner will finalize their deal on October 6. Right now, there is no set date for when HBO Max and Paramount+ will actually stop operating as separate apps. Merging two massive technical platforms takes time, so subscribers will likely keep using their current apps for the near future.

We should hear more details about the timeline soon. Once the acquisition is fully closed next Tuesday, the new leadership team is expected to map out the next steps for consumers.

This merger marks a major shift in how people stream content. By putting HBO Max and Paramount+ under one roof, Skydance is building a library capable of competing head-on with industry giants. The days of paying for these two separate subscriptions are numbered. Viewers can soon expect a single destination for their favorite movies and television shows.
