Apple continues expanding driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet, but Florida and Rhode Island have now signaled that support is unlikely to arrive anytime soon. The two states have different reasons for holding back, even as Apple adds more states to its digital ID system.
Apple Wallet lets residents in supported states store an eligible driver’s license or state ID on an iPhone and Apple Watch. Users can then present selected identity information at supported TSA checkpoints, businesses, websites, and apps using Face ID or Touch ID. Apple says only the requested information is shared during verification.
Florida is firmly against digital driver’s licenses
Florida currently has no plans to support driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet. Governor Ron DeSantis publicly opposed digital driver’s licenses in November 2025, arguing that the convenience does not outweigh concerns about potential government misuse of digital identity systems.

The position is particularly notable because Florida previously developed its own mobile driver’s license system called Florida Smart ID. State records show that Florida tested the system as part of its broader driver license modernization program, but the digital ID service was later discontinued.
Florida recently introduced redesigned physical driver’s licenses and ID cards without announcing any replacement digital ID system.
Rhode Island wants a broader solution
Rhode Island is also unlikely to introduce Apple Wallet support in the near term, although its reasoning is more focused on cost and adoption.
Walter “Bud” Craddock, a Rhode Island motor vehicle official and chair of the AAMVA International Board of Directors, recently questioned whether there is enough demand to justify building a mobile driver’s license system. He also said he would prefer a cross-platform solution instead of developing separate systems around Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.
| State | Apple Wallet status | Main reason |
|---|---|---|
| Florida | No near-term support | State leadership opposes digital driver’s licenses |
| Rhode Island | No near-term support | Cost, limited adoption, and preference for cross-platform support |
Rhode Island’s official DMV site currently lists physical licenses, permits, REAL ID, and state ID services, but it does not offer an Apple Wallet mobile license program.
Apple Wallet IDs are still expanding elsewhere
Florida and Rhode Island stand out because Apple’s rollout continues elsewhere. Apple’s developer documentation currently lists driver’s license or state ID support across states including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and West Virginia, along with Puerto Rico.

Apple also offers a separate passport-based Digital ID for eligible U.S. users, which helps people in unsupported states use an iPhone or Apple Watch for identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints. Our Apple Wallet Digital ID guide explains how that system differs from a state-issued driver’s license.
For now, residents of Florida and Rhode Island should expect to keep relying on their physical licenses, while Apple continues adding Wallet ID support elsewhere in the United States.
