200MP iPhone Camera Now in Testing Phase, Says Leak

A 200MP iPhone Is Coming, and Now We Know When

Apple is testing a 200MP primary camera sensor for future iPhones, according to a new rumor, and this move signals a clear shift in Apple’s camera strategy after years of sticking with lower megapixel counts while focusing on image processing.

Digital Chat Station on Weibo claims that Apple is currently experimenting with a 200MP sensor that measures around 1/1.2-inch, which is slightly larger than the 1/1.3-inch sensor used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, and this matters because a larger sensor captures more light and produces sharper images with less noise.

Apple’s 200MP camera could focus on the main sensor

The report adds that Apple is only testing the primary camera, while the telephoto and ultra-wide lenses may continue to use 48MP sensors, which suggests Apple still plans to balance hardware upgrades with its existing computational photography approach.

At the same time, a 200MP sensor gives Apple more flexibility with cropping, zoom, and detail retention, especially in good lighting, and that can help iPhones compete more directly with high-end Android flagships that already use similar hardware.

There is also talk of Apple working on a LOFIC camera system that offers up to 20 stops of dynamic range, which would improve highlights and shadows, but there is no confirmation that this technology will ship in upcoming models.

For now, Apple is only testing this hardware, and the final decision depends on performance, power use, and real-world results.
