Apple recently opened pre-orders for its updated MacBook Pro lineup with the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, but some customers had already placed orders for expensive M4 Max configurations just days before the announcement. Normally, that timing would frustrate buyers who suddenly find their order outdated. However, several customers now report that Apple canceled their original M4 Max MacBook Pro orders and replaced them with equivalent M5 Max models at the same price.
The reports suggest that Apple updated pending orders that had not yet shipped, which means some buyers will receive the newer hardware without paying extra. These were high-end configurations that included large amounts of unified memory and powerful GPU options, so customers had already committed to premium machines before Apple revealed the new generation.
Users on Reddit first noticed the change when their order status suddenly switched. A customer using the username “TheBaHa” explained that Apple canceled the M4 Max configuration and replaced it with a new M5 Max order without warning.
“I ordered a 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4 Max) last week with 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 64GB unified memory, 1TB SSD and a Standard (non-nano) display. I noticed yesterday that they cancelled my order and created a new one but I am only now realising that my order was cancelled and replaced with the M5. Which is great but will they match the spec I ordered first or will I just received a standard M5 MacBook? I can’t see the doc in the order.”
Another Reddit user with the username “_o2b_” shared a similar experience after placing an order earlier in February. The customer noticed that the order suddenly changed from an M4 Max model to an M5 Max version while the price remained the same.
“I placed an order for an M4 Max with a 48GB/16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU with a 1TB SSD in mid-February. Until 30 minutes ago, the order was still processing, and the delivery estimate was from March 3rd to 10th. Now, suddenly, my M4 Max order has been canceled, and an M5 Max is in processing, with a delivery estimate of March 11th. Did Apple do the unthinkable, or is it a glitch? I haven’t received any email about this yet and the pricing shows as same what the m4max was for.”
Customers Report Free Upgrades to M5 Models
Posts on X also describe the same situation. Some customers received notifications that Apple upgraded their order automatically because the original configuration had not yet shipped.
“My MacBook Pro M4 Max order got upgraded to an M5 Max automatically. 🙌 I’m still on an M1 and was trying to decide whether to go with an M4 or wait for M5. I finally gave up and went M4. Well, today they announced the M5s and changed my order so I receive it on launch day.”
Another customer highlighted what they described as “great customer service” after Apple replaced the older configuration without charging extra.
“Kudos to Apple and Tim Cook! I had ordered an M4 MacBook Pro back in February but the spec I had would take a month to get into inventory… I was really bummed when I saw the announcement about the new M5 chips yesterday! Just got a notice that they’re upgrading me at no cost b/c my laptop was still on order. That. Is. GREAT. Customer. Service.”
Apple introduced a new Fusion Architecture with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which allows individual CPU and GPU dies to sit on the same package. This design lowers electrical resistance, improves heat dissipation, and helps reduce manufacturing costs while improving performance and efficiency.
Some customers also reported that Apple replaced pending M4 MacBook Air orders with new M5 MacBook Air models. Based on these early reports, Apple appears to upgrade certain orders that remain in the processing stage instead of shipping the older hardware.
If Apple continues this approach, customers who ordered late M4 models shortly before the announcement will receive the latest M5 versions without paying more. If you recently ordered an M4 MacBook Pro or MacBook Air and your order has not shipped yet, check your order status and let us know if Apple upgraded it.
