Apple Introduces AudioAccessoryKit for Third Party Headphones on iPhone

Apple plans to expand support for third-party audio accessories with a new framework that improves how devices handle audio. The company introduced AudioAccessoryKit, which will allow compatible headphones to share data with iOS for smarter audio routing.

Apple confirmed that AudioAccessoryKit will enable features like automatic audio switching and placement detection. This means iPhones and iPads will detect when users wear or remove supported headphones and adjust audio output automatically.

This feature works similar to how AirPods switch between Apple devices today. However, Apple now wants to extend that experience to third-party accessory makers through official system integration.

Apple explains, “This framework supports iPhone and iPad only. You can develop and test an app that uses this framework on devices in any region. The framework currently builds only for development or Ad Hoc testing. The framework will support App Store submission, TestFlight, and alternative distribution at a later time.”

The feature is not ready for public release yet. Apple has limited access to developers and users in the European Union. Apps using this framework will only work on devices located in the EU and linked to an Apple account from that region.

Developers must pair accessories using AccessorySetupKit and then register them with AudioAccessoryKit. They also need to define supported features and send real-time updates, such as when headphones are worn or removed.

The framework also allows Bluetooth accessories to share connection details. This helps iOS decide which device should play audio when multiple devices are active.

AudioAccessoryKit supports devices running iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 or later. Apple plans to expand availability in future updates.
