Apple is working on a small AI-powered wearable that looks similar in size to an AirTag. The device takes the form of a thin, circular pin and includes cameras, microphones, and a speaker. If it reaches the market, it could arrive as early as 2027. The project is still early, and Apple has not locked in a release.
According to a new report from The Information, Apple has begun early development of this wearable and has not finalized plans. The report says the device could still be canceled if it does not meet internal goals or market expectations.
What Apple’s AI Pin Is Said to Include
The pin is designed to work as a standalone device. Its hardware points to a focus on voice interaction, visual input, and ambient awareness.
Key reported features include:
- Two front-facing cameras, one standard and one wide-angle, to capture photos and video
- Three microphones to pick up the surrounding sounds
- A built-in speaker for audio responses
- A physical button on the side for direct control
- Wireless charging similar to Apple Watch
Apple engineers want the pin to match the size of an AirTag, though it will be slightly thicker. At the moment, there is no confirmed attachment method, but that could change as development continues.
The report says Apple wants to speed up work on the pin to keep pace with upcoming AI wearables from competitors. OpenAI is expected to debut its first wearable in 2026, and Apple does not want to fall behind.
It is still unclear how Apple plans to sell the pin. The company may offer it on its own or pair it with other products like AirPods or future smart glasses. The presence of cameras, microphones, and a speaker suggests it can function independently.
A Tough Market for AI Wearables
The AI pin category has struggled so far. Humane’s AI Pin failed to gain traction in 2024 and reportedly sold fewer than 10,000 units. Critics pointed to slow responses and weak battery life. Humane later sold parts of its business to HP for $116 million.
This history raises a clear question. Even if Apple builds a better product, demand is not guaranteed.
Tied to Apple’s Bigger AI Reset
This project surfaces as Apple reshapes its AI strategy. The company has faced criticism for delays after promising major AI upgrades for Siri. It has also made leadership changes and announced plans to use Google’s Gemini technology as part of a new Siri foundation.
A recent report also claims Apple plans to replace Siri’s current interface with a full chatbot experience in iOS 27. If the pin launches, it will likely rely on that new Siri system.
For now, Apple’s AI pin remains an experiment. A 2027 release is possible, but nothing is final. The company is still deciding whether this small device has a real place in people’s lives.
