Apple’s 50th Year: Tim Cook Calls the Company “A Party of One”

Apple will turn 50 on April 1, marking half a century since the company started in 1976. CEO Tim Cook says the milestone feels unusual for a company that rarely stops to celebrate its past because Apple usually focuses on building what comes next and improving products people already use. Even so, the approaching anniversary has pushed Apple to reflect on its journey and the principles that shaped the company.

Cook explained that Apple has had to develop what he described as a new habit to acknowledge the anniversary because the company culture centers on looking forward, designing new ideas, and anticipating what people will want before they even ask for it. That mindset has guided Apple for decades and continues to shape how the company approaches innovation today.

Reflecting on 50 years of Apple

In an interview with CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” conducted by David Pogue for his upcoming book Apple: The First 50 Years, Cook discussed Apple’s legacy and the influence of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Cook said Jobs left behind a clear set of ideas that still guide Apple today.

“The principles that he laid out for the company are still living today.”

Cook also recalled the advice Jobs gave him before his death in 2011, urging him not to constantly ask what Steve would do when leading the company.

“It was such a gift for me for Steve to tell me before he passed away to never ask what he would do.”

Cook believes those ideas continue to shape Apple’s future and will remain part of the company for generations.

“Steve’s principles are the DNA of this company 50 years after its inception and I hope 100 years and 200 years into the future.”

Apple in a “party of one”

Cook says Apple still stands apart from other companies because of its culture and approach to innovation.

“I think Apple is such a unique place. It’s not possible to replicate it… Apple is just in a party of one.”
