Apple’s Ex-AI Chief John Giannandrea Lands New Role at Billion-Dollar UK Startup

Apple John Giannandrea departs

John Giannandrea has already moved quickly after leaving Apple, with reports revealing that the former Apple AI chief is joining UK-based startup CuspAI to help expand its presence in the United States. After wrapping up his final days at Apple earlier this month, Giannandrea is now shifting his focus toward science-focused artificial intelligence, marking his first major step since departing the company.

According to Upstarts Media:

“Apple’s longtime former AI chief John Giannandrea is joining a science AI startup, CuspAI, to help build out its U.S. operations. The former boss for efforts including Apple Intelligence, robotics and Siri plans to work part-time with CuspAI, leading the Cambridge, U.K.-based materials lab’s efforts to open a Bay Area office with heavyweight AI talent.”

This new advisory role places Giannandrea in a strategic position as CuspAI pushes deeper into AI-driven materials discovery, an area gaining major investor attention. Reports indicate that the startup is pursuing significant funding while building a stronger foothold in Silicon Valley, and Giannandrea’s leadership experience gives CuspAI valuable credibility as it scales.

Why CuspAI Chose Giannandrea

CuspAI focuses on using artificial intelligence to discover new materials for industrial and scientific applications, making it very different from Giannandrea’s consumer-facing work at Apple and Google. However, his deep background in search, machine learning, and AI infrastructure makes him a major asset as the company builds its US operations and recruits top-tier talent.

While Giannandrea’s Apple tenure drew criticism due to Apple’s struggles in AI, his reputation in the broader AI industry remains strong enough for startups to actively seek his expertise. His decision to reportedly consult with multiple AI startups also suggests he intends to stay deeply involved in shaping the next phase of artificial intelligence innovation.
