Apple is reportedly preparing its first foldable iPhone, and the early details suggest the company sees it as far more than another yearly upgrade. If this device arrives as expected, it will mark Apple’s first real iPhone form factor shift in years, while opening the door to a bigger screen that still folds down into a pocket-friendly design.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman described the device in unusually strong terms and framed it as a major moment for the iPhone line.
“This is going to be the most significant overhaul in the iPhone’s history and the first actual form-factor change. The iPhone 4, iPhone 6 and iPhone X were clearly a big deal, but this is a whole new design — even if it’s basically a copy of what other phone makers have been doing for years.”
That “whole new design” is expected to use a book-style fold, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line, which means users would get a regular outer display for quick tasks and a much larger inner display for video, gaming, reading, and multitasking. Reported specs point to a 7.7-inch inner screen and a 5.3-inch outer screen, which would give Apple room to push iPad-like multitasking features inside iOS 27.
Apple’s foldable could offer
The appeal is easy to understand because a foldable iPhone would give Apple something the standard model cannot: a device that works like a phone when closed and feels closer to a small tablet when open. Gurman also said the format improves video watching, mobile gaming, and work on the go, and that view lines up with Apple’s likely software strategy.
Other reports suggest Apple is working on a display that reduces the crease rather than removing it fully, while analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.
Right now, the foldable iPhone is expected to debut in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, though some reports say shipping could happen later. Pricing also looks premium, with estimates starting at $1,999 or more.
