Alan Dye is leaving Apple after leading its Human Interface Design team since 2015. Bloomberg reports that Meta has hired him as it builds more AI-equipped consumer devices. His exit marks a major shift inside Apple’s design group at a time when the company is rolling out its largest interface changes in years.
Apple confirmed that Stephen Lemay will replace Dye. Lemay has spent more than two decades shaping Apple’s interfaces, and Apple leadership says he has helped define the look and feel of nearly every major product since 1999.
Tim Cook praised his work in a statement shared with Bloomberg, noting his strong influence on Apple’s design culture.
Dye told Apple’s senior team about his departure this week, though Bloomberg explains that top management expected it. He will officially start at Meta on December 31, where he will run a new design studio and guide hardware, software, and AI integration across Meta’s products.
Dye’s Influence on Apple’s Modern Design
Dye gained even more responsibility after Jony Ive left Apple in 2019. Since then, he shaped major software projects, including the Liquid Glass design in iOS 26 that he introduced on stage at WWDC. He also played a key role in Apple Vision Pro and the evolution of visionOS.
Bloomberg adds that Billy Sorrentino, Dye’s deputy, is also leaving Apple to join Meta. His departure further reshapes Apple’s long-standing design leadership as both companies race to define the next generation of consumer devices powered by AI.
