Apple has enabled a new category of apps in CarPlay with the release of iOS 26.4, and OpenAI has quickly taken advantage of it. The ChatGPT app for iPhone now supports CarPlay through a dedicated voice-based experience. This update allows users to interact with ChatGPT directly from their car’s dashboard.
Apple introduced support for “voice-based conversational apps” in iOS 26.4. This change expands the types of apps allowed in CarPlay, which Apple tightly controls to reduce driver distraction. CarPlay apps must follow strict templates and focus on simple, safe interactions.
The ChatGPT CarPlay app follows these rules closely. It does not display text or images. Instead, it relies entirely on voice interaction. Users can speak to ChatGPT just like they would on their iPhone using voice mode.
The interface remains minimal. It includes an End button and a mute or unmute control. Apart from these options, all actions depend on voice commands. Users can also access a list of previous voice conversations.
Apple states, “Voice-based conversational apps must have a primary modality of voice upon launch; and after launch, appropriately respond to questions or requests and perform actions.”
The ChatGPT integration allows users to ask questions hands-free while driving. However, it does not control vehicle functions or iPhone settings. There is also no wake word support, so users must open the app manually to start using it.
Apple continues to limit CarPlay apps to specific categories such as audio, communication, navigation, and EV charging. With this update, voice-based AI apps now join that list under strict guidelines.
OpenAI is the first major AI company to release a dedicated CarPlay app. Users need an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later and the latest version of the ChatGPT app to access this feature.
