Chrome on iOS Tests AI Mode Assistant Panel That Opens Over Webpages

Chrome on iOS tests an AI Mode assistant panel that opens as a bottom sheet over webpages. The panel slides up from the bottom of the screen while the current page stays visible behind it.

A demo video attached to a Chromium code review shows the interface in action. The videos show the feature in Chrome’s menu under an option named “Open AIM prototype.” The footage appears in the commit discussion as part of internal testing work.

The panel greets the user and presents suggested prompts. Tabs appear at the top of the assistant with categories such as AI Mode, All, Images, Videos, News, and Products. The categories match the filters used in Google Search.

The assistant runs as a layer over the page instead of sending the user to a new tab. In the commit demonstrations, the assistant loads search content inside the panel.

Chromium commits also describe how the assistant loads web content inside the panel and opens a default search page. Another change adds logic for a search input within the assistant.

The menu entry carries the label “AIM prototype.” AIM refers to AI Mode, Google’s AI-driven search experience.

Chrome already includes shortcuts to AI Mode in other parts of the browser. Some builds place an AI Mode entry point on the New Tab Page, which opens the AI search interface.

The assistant opens AI Mode from the the current webpage. Instead of opening a new page, the interface slides up as a bottom sheet over the site.

Chromium commits also reference work on the assistant’s bottom-sheet behavior. The code includes support for resizing and gesture controls.

The feature is currently under development in Chrome for iOS.
