The iPhone 17 Pro brings big hardware and software upgrades, yet it quietly removes a feature you might rely on. Night mode portraits no longer work on this model. Apple’s own support document confirms the change, even though older Pro models handled this combination without effort.
You notice the difference the moment you try to take a portrait in a dark room. Earlier phones like the iPhone 16 Pro blended Portrait mode with Night mode to brighten faces and smooth backgrounds. The iPhone 17 Pro removes that option, and users across Reddit and Apple’s forums flagged the missing toggle. Macworld also confirmed the behavior during side-by-side tests.
The camera hardware itself improves on every front, from the new Center Stage front lens to the trio of 48MP Fusion cameras. Even so, this removal stands out because it affects anyone who shoots portraits at night or in dim spaces.
Night Mode Portraits Disappeared
Night mode normally increases exposure time to gather more light. Earlier Pro models saved depth data during these long exposures, so Portrait mode still worked. On iPhone 17 Pro, that depth data is no longer captured when Night mode activates.
- Night mode disappears when you switch to Portrait mode at night.
- Photos taken in Night mode on iPhone 17 Pro no longer store depth information.
- You cannot convert a Night mode shot into a portrait later.
- The feature works on older models, including:
- iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max
- iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max
Some hoped a software bug caused the issue. However, Apple’s own documentation confirms this is intentional. Users who rely on Night mode portraits should keep this in mind before upgrading, at least until Apple decides to restore the feature in a future update.
