Apple plans something big for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027, but the phone may not look as clean and seamless as early rumors suggested. For months, many expected Apple to launch an all-glass iPhone with no visible cutouts in the display. New comments now suggest Apple still needs more time to reach that goal.
The main question is simple. Will Apple really ship a true full-screen iPhone in 2027, or will some form of notch or cutout remain?
What Ross Young Now Says
Display analyst Ross Young shared new details this week after clarifying his earlier comments about Apple’s screen roadmap. He said Apple will keep a smaller version of the Dynamic Island for several more years. That includes the iPhone 18 Pro later this year and models all the way through 2027.
Young also said Apple still plans to use a centered cutout in 2028. It will look like a small hole punch, sitting in the middle of the screen. Face ID and the selfie camera will not sit fully under the display by then.
Here is what his timeline shows.
- 2026 and 2027 iPhones keep a smaller Dynamic Island
- Face ID does not move fully under the display in that period
- 2028 iPhone Pro still uses a centered hole punch
- A true full-screen iPhone comes closer to 2030
20th Anniversary iPhone
Earlier reports said Apple wanted the 2027 iPhone to mark its 20th birthday with a bold all-glass design. Those reports pointed to a screen with no cutouts at all.
Young’s comments now cast doubt on that idea. If his supply chain sources are right, Apple will not finish moving Face ID and the front camera under the display by 2027.
Still, one option remains open. Apple could launch a special anniversary model above the Pro line. That phone could use the full-screen design, while the regular Pro models keep the smaller Dynamic Island.
Apple plans to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max this September. Whatever Apple has planned for its 20th anniversary will arrive in the fall of 2027. Whether it brings a true edge-to-edge screen or not now looks far less certain.
