John Ternus Led iPadOS Creation to Unlock iPad Potential

OLED iPad Mini 8: Release Date, Specs, Price and What to Expect

Apple’s hardware chief John Ternus played a key role in shaping the iPad’s evolution, including pushing for the creation of iPadOS. A recent report highlights how his early decisions helped improve both the software and hardware experience of the iPad.

Bloomberg reports that Ternus believed the iPad’s hardware was not fully used in its early years. At the time, the device ran the same operating system as the iPhone, which limited its ability to take advantage of a larger screen and more powerful processor.

Mark Gurman writes, “In the early days of the iPad, Ternus argued the device’s hardware capabilities weren’t used to the fullest because its software platform wasn’t taking advantage of the tablet’s more powerful processor and bigger screen.”

Bloomberg adds that Ternus pushed for a separate operating system and worked with Apple’s software leadership to make it happen. This effort led to the launch of iPadOS, which introduced features such as improved multitasking and a more desktop-like experience.

Influence beyond hardware

Ternus also contributed to key iPad accessories. He helped drive the development of the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, along with their magnetic charging and pairing systems. These additions improved how users interact with the device for both creative and professional work.

The shift from iOS to iPadOS marked a major turning point for the iPad. It allowed Apple to build features designed specifically for a tablet instead of adapting phone software.

Bloomberg notes that Ternus is widely seen as a potential future CEO of Apple. His role in both hardware and software decisions reflects Apple’s collaborative approach to product development.
