People across the United States are now seeing deposits marked “Lopez v. Apple” or “Lopez Voice Assistant” appear in their bank and payment app accounts. These payments come from the Lopez v. Apple Inc. settlement, a class action case tied to claims that Apple’s voice assistant Siri recorded private conversations without user consent. For many customers, the deposit confirms that their approved claim under the settlement has now turned into real money.
Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle the lawsuit, even though the company denied any wrongdoing. The legal notice also confirmed that payments started going out on Friday, January 23, with funds sent through direct deposit, Venmo, PayPal, or paper checks, based on what each claimant selected during the filing process.
Lopez v. Apple lawsuit claims
The Lopez v. Apple lawsuit focused on alleged privacy violations. The case, filed in a California federal court in 2021, claimed that Apple recorded private conversations when Siri turned on by accident. These activations happened when users pressed a button or when Siri reacted to words that sounded like “Hey, Siri.”
According to the lawsuit, Apple collected “confidential or private communications” and then shared them with third-party advertisers. Some users said they saw ads for products they talked about out loud, while others said their devices listened even when they did not try to activate Siri.
The complaint also pointed to a 2019 report that found Apple contractors sometimes heard sensitive audio clips. At the time, Apple said it reviewed only a small amount of data to improve Siri and dictation.
Under the Lopez v. Apple Inc. settlement, Apple set aside $95 million for payments. Each device qualified for up to $20, and each person could submit claims for as many as five devices. That meant a maximum possible payout of $100 per person.
However, payouts depend on how many people filed valid claims. Reports from claimants show that the average payment per device landed around $8, which means some people received close to $40 for five devices.
Who qualified and what’s next
Anyone who owned a Siri-enabled device and experienced an unintended Siri activation during a private conversation between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, qualified for the settlement. Eligible devices included iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, Apple TV, HomePod, and iPod touch.
The deadline to file a claim was July 2, 2025. Anyone who missed that date will not receive a payment, even if their device was affected.
