MacBook Neo USB-C Ports Are Not the Same, Here’s the Difference

Apple’s new MacBook Neo includes two USB-C ports, but they do not deliver the same capabilities, and this detail matters when you connect accessories or external displays. Both ports support charging, yet they run at different data speeds and support different features, so users need to plug cables into the correct side depending on the task.

One port works as a USB-C 3 connection with data transfer speeds up to 10 Gb/s, while the second port runs at USB-C 2 speeds limited to 480 Mb/s. In addition, only the faster USB-C 3 port supports DisplayPort, which means users must connect an external monitor through that specific port if they want video output.

According to Apple’s official press release, MacBook Neo includes two USB-C ports for accessories and charging, alongside a standard headphone jack for wired audio.

Two USB-C Ports With Different Speeds

The two ports appear identical on the outside, so users cannot visually tell them apart when plugging in a cable. Apple likely limited one port due to the USB controller used in the A18 Pro chip, which powers the laptop.

MacBook Neo also skips MagSafe charging and relies fully on USB-C for power. The laptop is available to pre-order now, with customer deliveries and retail availability starting Wednesday, March 11.
