Netflix Removes Casting Support From Most Phones and TVs

Netflix has taken away the option to cast shows and movies from your phone to most TVs. You now need to open Netflix directly on your TV and use its remote to play anything. The change appeared quietly, and many users noticed the missing Cast button in the last few weeks.

One Reddit user said the feature disappeared on November 10 with no warning. That early report lined up with what users saw across different devices as more people shared the same issue. As confusion grew, Netflix updated its support page to confirm that casting no longer works on most smart TVs and modern streaming boxes.

Netflix’s updated help page, first spotted by Android Authority, explains that casting still works on a small list of older devices. The company also added new details later on December 1 after more users complained. The page now makes it clear that only a handful of products can still receive casts from the Netflix mobile app.

What Still Supports Casting

  • Chromecast third generation or older
  • Google Nest Hub
  • Select Vizio TVs with built-in Cast
  • Select Compal TVs with built-in Cast

A customer care representative reportedly told a user that if a device has its own remote, you cannot cast to it. They said the decision improves the experience, although many customers disagree because they liked controlling Netflix from their phones.

Netflix also restricts casting by plan type. You can only cast on these older devices if you pay for an ad-free plan. Anyone using the cheaper ad-supported tier loses casting completely, even on hardware that still technically supports it.

As users noted on Reddit, classic Chromecast sticks continue to appear as Cast targets in the mobile app. However, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer boxes, and most TVs running Google TV no longer show up at all.
