Spotify confirms classic green logo will replace temporary disco ball icon

Spotify users can stop worrying because the shiny green disco ball app icon is not here to stay. The company has confirmed that the temporary redesign is part of its 20th anniversary celebration and that the regular Spotify logo will return soon.

The new icon started appearing on iPhone and Android home screens this week as part of Spotify’s “Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s)” campaign. Instead of the familiar flat green circle with black soundwave lines, users suddenly saw a reflective green disco ball replacing the classic design.

Many users initially assumed Spotify was preparing a permanent rebrand. That quickly triggered backlash across Reddit and X, where people complained that the icon looked outdated, distracting, or inconsistent with modern home screen aesthetics. Some users even said the glossy effect made the app look like it was stuck downloading.

Spotify has since responded to concerned users online, clarifying that the disco ball logo is only temporary and that the standard icon will return this week.

Why did the icon change in the first place? The answer is tied directly to Spotify’s 20th birthday campaign. Alongside the temporary logo, the company launched nostalgic features that let users revisit their first streamed song, total listening history, and all-time favorite tracks.

Interestingly, the reaction also highlights how personal app icons have become for smartphone users. A small visual change can immediately stand out on carefully customized home screens, especially when an app as recognizable as Spotify suddenly shifts away from its minimal look.

Still, some users actually enjoyed the temporary redesign and praised Spotify for trying something playful instead of sticking to another safe flat icon update.
