The University of Texas has announced plans to introduce digital student IDs with Apple Wallet support starting in the 2027 to 2028 academic year. The move aims to modernize campus access and give students a more convenient way to use their university credentials.
The university confirmed that students will be able to use their digital IDs for several daily activities. These include entering campus buildings, paying for dining and retail, attending events, and accessing library services. Students will receive their digital IDs through the MyUT portal and can add them to Apple Wallet or Android Wallet.
The initiative comes after years of student demand for a digital solution. The Student Government played a key role in pushing the project forward.
Student leaders Thomas and Chu said, “For years, students called for digital IDs, and together, we delivered. We are honored to have had Student Government partner with our incredible University administrators to make this long-standing student vision a shared reality.”
Focus on security and cost savings
The university also highlighted the practical benefits of digital IDs. Unlike physical cards, digital credentials stay linked to a personal device and update in real time. This reduces the risk of misuse and improves overall security.
The university stated, “Unlike physical cards, digital credentials reduce the risk of loaned or shared cards because they are tied to a personal device and can be updated in near real time.”
The shift will also lower costs. Students will not need to pay for replacement cards, and the university will reduce spending on card production.
The Enterprise Technology team is currently working on the project, which is still in the planning and feedback stage. Physical IDs will remain available alongside digital versions during the transition period.
The University of Texas at Austin has over 55,000 students, making this one of the largest rollouts of Apple Wallet student ID support.
