Apple completely redesigned the Workout app in watchOS 26, but the initial rollout left many Apple Watch owners feeling frustrated with the new tracking interface. Users consistently noted that the updated app felt sluggish and required far too many screen interactions just to begin a basic exercise session.
With the upcoming release of watchOS 26.4, Apple is directly addressing these usability concerns by reverting a key interaction mechanic to a much more familiar state.
The update fixes the tap-to-start issue
Before this update, watchOS 26 presented users with a scrollable list of workout icons and labels. Naturally, people expected to tap the specific workout icon from the main list to get started. Instead, the software required the full workout layout to load first. Even worse, tapping the prominently centered workout type icon within that layout did absolutely nothing.
The interface forced users to locate and press a separate play button at the bottom of the screen to actually initiate the tracking. This specific layout change interrupted a decade of established muscle memory and made the recording process feel unnecessarily complex.
It restores familiar functionality
According to the official release notes for the new software version, the workout type icon now allows you to start a workout with a single tap. The central icon and the bottom play button now perform the same function. This eliminates the widespread confusion caused by the initial watchOS 26 redesign and speeds up the entire process of getting a run, swim, or cycling session underway.
You no longer have to hunt for a secondary button to begin recording your physical activity.
Looking ahead to the public release
While tapping the icon straight from the scrollable list still requires the full workout view to load before registering a second tap, the overall software interaction is significantly smoother. It shows the development team is actively listening to user feedback and is willing to adjust their interface designs to prioritize practical usability over visual decoration.
The watchOS 26.4 software update is currently available to developers and beta testers as a release candidate. The final version is expected to launch for the general public next week, bringing this highly requested improvement to all compatible Apple Watch models.
