Apple has officially announced watchOS 27 at WWDC 2026 alongside iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, iPadOS 27, and other software updates. While the new release brings several new features, the biggest surprise is the sharp reduction in supported Apple Watch models, leaving many existing users unable to upgrade.
The update introduces the new Siri AI app, workout data insights, Spanish support for Workout Buddy, and other enhancements designed to improve the Apple Watch experience. However, Apple has ended support for a large number of watches that were previously eligible for software updates.
Apple Watch Models Compatible With watchOS 27
According to Apple, the following models support watchOS 27:
- Apple Watch SE (3rd generation)
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
Apple Watch Models Losing Support
Apple has dropped support for several older models, including:
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation)
This change marks one of the biggest compatibility cuts in Apple Watch history, as devices released within the last few years are no longer eligible for the latest software update.
iPhone Requirements for watchOS 27
To install watchOS 27, users need an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer) running iOS 27. As with previous releases, some features may remain limited depending on the Apple Watch model being used.
For many users, the compatibility list is the most surprising part of watchOS 27, especially since the oldest supported Apple Watch is now less than two years old.
