WhatsApp Working on Auto Translate for Chats and Groups on iOS

WhatsApp adds Group Message History to help new members catch up

WhatsApp is developing a feature that will automatically translate messages in iPhone chats. This update aims to help you talk with people who use different languages without needing manual steps each time. Once enabled, the app will translate incoming messages in real time inside the chat.

The feature depends on Apple’s on-device language packs. You choose the source and target language, and WhatsApp handles the rest in the background. In practice, you will see translated messages as soon as they arrive, while still having the option to view the original text.

WABetaInfo reported this feature after spotting changes in the latest TestFlight beta build. The report shows a new “Translate messages” toggle in chat settings, along with options to select languages and manage translation behavior.

Since messages are processed locally to preserve end-to-end encryption, users will have to download language packs. Downloading language packs will let users translate messages instantly without relying on an Internet connection.

How the feature works

Right now, WhatsApp requires manual translation for each message. You need to press and hold a message, tap “More,” and then select translation options. This new system removes that process and applies translation automatically.

Here is what you get with the new update:

  • A per-chat toggle to enable automatic translation
  • Language selection for both source and output
  • Instant translation of incoming messages
  • Support for one-on-one and group chats
  • Local processing using Apple’s APIs to keep chats private

WhatsApp supports around 21 languages through Apple’s translation packs. These include English, Hindi, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and more. Support depends on your iOS version, since older versions do not include all language packs.

The feature remains under development and is not live for beta testers yet. WhatsApp continues to refine how automatic translation works before a wider rollout.
