X has introduced Chat, a new end-to-end encrypted messaging system that replaces the old direct messages. You get a cleaner setup, stronger privacy, and a set of tools that make one-on-one conversations feel more secure. The rollout has started on iOS through the X app, and older messages move to the new system automatically.
You can edit messages, delete them, share files, and start voice or video calls. You also get options to block screenshots or receive alerts when someone tries to take one. Engadget highlighted the long delay behind this launch, pointing to issues X faced earlier when trying to bring encryption to group chats.
Privacy Details and Limitations
X’s help center explains that the new Chat system now encrypts group messages and shared media. But the service does not encrypt metadata. This means details about who you message still sit outside the encrypted layer. X admits that its system lacks full protection against man-in-the-middle attacks, so a determined insider or even the company itself, if legally required, can theoretically access a conversation without alerting anyone.
The company says it is working on tools that let you confirm the integrity of your encrypted chats. Earlier this year, X paused its first attempt at encrypted messaging to fix undisclosed problems. A voice memo option is still in development, and Android support will follow soon.
New Features Rolling Out
X’s shift from Twitter branding now extends to private messaging. The platform finally delivers real end-to-end encryption, something the old DMs never offered. Along with calls and disappearing messages, the update aims to modernize how users talk on the platform while giving them more control over privacy.
