TMO Background Mode Interview #4 with Tidbits Managing Editor Josh Centers

· John Martellaro · Background Mode Podcast

Josh Centers on Background Mode.

Josh Centers is the Managing Editor of and has published several Take Control (TC) books. He’s the author of Take Control of Apple TV and Take Control of Home Automation. He’s been writing the Take Control books for iOS since version 8, and his latest book is Take Control of iOS 12.

Josh is a great guest and very knowledgeable about Apple, so I invited him to return to Background Mode for the fourth time. In this show, we first discussed the technology and viability of foldable smartphones. Will Apple develop a foldable iPhone or iPad? Or not at all? In the second segment we took a close look at Apple’s new original TV content and service. We pondered pricing, if not free, and how the March 25 “It’s show time” event might play out.

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Wired writes:

Foldable phones like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Huawei’s Mate X are coming, whether you’re ready or not. In fact, they’re coming whether they’re ready or not. The software remains untested or nonexistent. The prices are either astronomical or unannounced. But those potential issues can be fixed on the fly. The real thing you should hold out for? Glass.

Wired explores the technical prospects for real, foldable glass. It’s coming.

Foldable Phones are a Gimmick That Apple Doesn't Need

· Andrew Orr · Link

I’ll go on the record to say that, while I think foldable phones are interesting, I also think they are gimmicky and Apple doesn’t need to chase that trend. But in a new interview with Steve Wozniak, he says he wants a foldable iPhone.

“Apple has been a leader for quite a long time in a few areas such as touch ID, facial ID, and easy payment with the phone,” Wozniak said in a Bloomberg TV interview. “They’re not the leader in areas like the folding phone, and that worries me because I really want a folding phone.”
