Instagram Ends Message Encryption, Making Your DMs Less Private

Instagram Says “No Breach” After Suspicious Login Warnings

If you rely on Instagram to send messages to friends, those chats are no longer entirely private. Starting May 8, 2026, the popular platform officially ended support for end-to-end encryption in its direct messaging feature. This change means Meta can theoretically access the contents of anything you send or receive moving forward.

Users who want to keep older conversations hidden have been instructed to download their data before it becomes accessible.

Meta drops the encryption feature after low user adoption rates

The encryption option first appeared on the app back in 2023. It allowed users to secure individual conversations. However, the company never made the security feature a default setting. You had to dig into a specific menu for each chat to turn it on.

Because it was hidden, very few people actually used it. A spokesperson explained that the low adoption rate is the main reason it decided to remove the option entirely. Instead of pushing for wider use, the platform suggests using WhatsApp for secure messaging. Keep in mind that WhatsApp is another app owned by the same company.

Child safety concerns and new global laws drive the change

There is more to this decision than just low usage numbers. Earlier this year, a jury ordered the company to pay $375 million over claims that it misled people about user safety and failed to stop child exploitation. Dropping encryption allows the platform to scan messages for harmful content. It can now actively look for material related to abuse and grooming.

At the same time, governments around the world are pushing harder against private messaging platforms. Lawmakers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union want authorities to have more power to find illegal content. Removing the digital lock on messages makes it much easier to comply with incoming rules like the new Take It Down Act.

For now, this update only affects direct messages on the app. If you want to talk without the possibility of someone else reading your texts, you will need to switch to a different service.

Options like Signal or iMessage still offer full protection by default, keeping your daily conversations strictly between you and the person on the other end.
