Signal now lets you back up and restore your chats on iPhone if you lose access to your device. Until now, message recovery has stayed limited and often risky. Now, you get a safer way to keep your history intact while staying in control.
How secure backups work on iPhone
To start, Signal gives you two backup options. The free plan stores up to 100MB of recent messages with media from the last 45 days. Meanwhile, the paid plan costs $1.99 per month and saves your full message history plus up to 100GB of older media.

You unlock these backups with a 64-character recovery key that Signal generates on your device. Because of this, you must keep that key safe. If you lose it, Signal cannot restore your data, and your backups stay locked permanently.
Next, setup takes only a minute. Open Settings in the Signal app, tap Backups, then select Setup and Enable Backups. After that, choose your preferred plan and continue using the app as usual.
What this update means for you
Earlier, secure backups reached Android users, and now iPhone users gain the same protection. As a result, you no longer rely only on local storage if your phone gets lost or damaged.
Soon, Signal plans to expand this feature to its desktop app as well. Over time, you will also move your message history between iPhone, Android, and desktop more easily, which keeps your conversations consistent across devices.
