Apple Music: How to Download Music for Offline Listening

Downloading music from Apple Music sounds simple, and it is. But there are a few rules baked into how Apple does it, and if you miss one, you end up staring at a spinning icon instead of hearing your favorite track. Here’s the clear, no-nonsense way to download music from Apple Music and actually make it work when you’re offline.

First Things First: Adding Music vs Downloading It

Here’s the thing most people miss. Adding music to your library is not the same as downloading it.

Adding saves the song, album, or playlist to your Apple Music library so it shows up everywhere you’re signed in. Downloading is a separate step that stores the music locally on your device so it plays without an internet connection.

You need to do both.

How to Download Music on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, or Android

  1. Start in the Apple Music app.
  2. Find the song, album, or playlist you want. Tap Add to Library. Once it’s added, you’ll see a download icon.
  3. Tap the Download button at the top of an album or playlist, or tap the three dots next to a song and choose Download.

That’s it. The music will save to your device and play offline.

If you download a lot of music, turn on Automatic Downloads.

  1. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Music, and switch it on.

From that point forward, anything you add to your library downloads automatically.

How to Download Music on Mac or PC

  1. Open the Apple Music app on your computer.
  2. Find the music you want and click Add.
  3. Once it’s in your library, hover over the song or open the album and click the Download button.

Downloaded music appears under your Library and is available even when you’re offline. Just keep in mind that Apple Music downloads can’t be burned to discs or manually transferred to other devices. Downloads stay inside Apple Music.

Make Sure Sync Library Is Turned On

If downloads aren’t showing up across your devices, this is usually why.

  1. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, then Apps, then Music, and turn on Sync Library.
  2. On Mac, open Music, go to Settings, and enable Sync Library there too.

Once it’s on, your library stays in sync across devices using the same Apple Account.

Managing Storage So Downloads Don’t Take Over Your Device

Offline music adds up fast.

To remove a download but keep it in your library, press and hold the song and tap Remove Download. The song stays saved in Apple Music but frees up space on your device.

If storage is tight, turn on Optimize Storage in Music settings. Apple will automatically remove downloads you haven’t played in a while.

Cellular Data and Audio Quality Matter

If downloads are slow or failing, check your data settings.

In Music settings, you can allow or block downloads over cellular. You can also control audio quality. Lossless and high-resolution audio sound great, but they use a lot more data and storage.

If you want faster downloads and fewer headaches, stick with High Quality unless you know you want lossless.

The Bottom Line

Downloading music from Apple Music is straightforward once you know the flow. Add to library first. Download second. Make sure Sync Library is on. Manage storage before it becomes a problem.

Do that, and your music is ready whenever the internet isn’t.
