Apple has confirmed a major shift in how it builds artificial intelligence. Google’s Gemini will not only power a more personal version of Siri, but also serve as the foundation for future Apple Intelligence features. This is not a small partnership. It changes how Apple plans to scale its AI across devices and services.
Gemini Becomes Apple’s AI Backbone
Apple and Google said the two companies have signed a multi-year agreement. Under this deal, Apple’s next generation of Foundation Models will rely on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.
Apple and Google said, “The next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year.”
Apple also said it is “excited about the innovative new experiences” this partnership will unlock, though it did not list specific features.
The first visible result will be a redesigned Siri. Apple plans to roll out a more personalized assistant with iOS 26.4, expected in March or April. The new Siri will better understand personal context, read what is on your screen, and control apps more deeply.
Apple has shown examples such as asking Siri about a family member’s flight or lunch plans based on information from Mail and Messages. This points to an assistant that works across apps instead of answering simple questions.
It remains unclear whether Gemini will also power existing tools like Writing Tools, Image Playground, or Notification Summaries.
Privacy Still Stays In-House
Apple says it will continue to run Apple Intelligence on its own devices and through its Private Cloud Compute servers. The company repeated that it will keep its “industry-leading privacy standards,” even while using Google’s AI models behind the scenes.
In short, Apple has chosen Gemini as the core of its AI stack. Siri is only the beginning. The larger shift is how Apple plans to build and scale intelligence across its entire platform.
