Apple plans to power its first foldable iPhone with the same A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The device is expected to launch this September alongside Apple’s top-end phones, marking a major step in Apple’s hardware roadmap.
A20 Pro Chip and 2nm Process
The foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18 Pro models will run on the A20 Pro chip. Apple will build this chip using TSMC’s new 2nm process called N2. This shift should bring faster performance and better power efficiency compared to the A19 generation. Users can expect quicker processing and improved battery life as a result.
The A20 Pro will also use a new chip packaging method. Apple plans to integrate RAM directly onto the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. This change reduces latency and frees up internal space. That extra room gives Apple more flexibility for batteries and other components.
The new packaging design should improve Apple Intelligence tasks and reduce power consumption. At the same time, the smaller chip footprint helps Apple manage heat and internal layout more effectively.
The N2 process also introduces upgraded capacitors in the chip’s power system. These parts improve power stability and efficiency, which supports sustained performance during demanding tasks.
In a separate investor note, industry analyst Jeff Pu said the foldable iPhone and Pro models will share several key specs. These include 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, 48-megapixel rear cameras, and Apple’s C2 modem.
Foldable iPhone Design Details
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to use a book-style design. Reports point to a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display. The device is said to focus on a crease-free screen and include Touch ID. It may also feature front cameras that work in both folded and unfolded modes.
Thickness is another focus. The foldable iPhone could measure around 4.5mm when open and roughly 9 to 9.5mm when closed. These numbers suggest Apple is aiming for a slim and practical design rather than an experimental one.
If these details hold, Apple’s foldable iPhone will arrive as a premium device built on the same core technology as its flagship Pro models.
