Apple Launches New Age Verification Measures for Developers

App Store updates improve how developers submit and promote apps

Apple age assurance tools are now expanding to more regions as new App Store restrictions for 18+ apps take effect in parts of the United States, Brazil, Australia, and Singapore. The company has started blocking users from downloading 18+ apps in certain countries unless it confirms they are adults through approved methods. These changes place more responsibility on both Apple and app developers to verify age before access.

The new rules begin in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore, where users cannot download apps rated 18+ unless Apple confirms they are adults. Apple says the App Store will handle this check automatically, but developers may still need to verify age within their own apps. For that, Apple has updated its Declared Age Range API, which is now available in beta for testing.

Apple shared the update on its Developer blog and explained the scope of the changes:

“Today we’re providing an update on the tools available for developers to meet their age assurance obligations under upcoming U.S. and regional laws, including in Brazil, Australia, Singapore, Utah, and Louisiana. Updates to the Declared Age Range API are now available in beta for testing.”

Country-Specific Changes

In Brazil, developers who use the Declared Age Range API can access a user’s age group if the user or a parent or guardian agrees to share it. Apple will also automatically update any app that declares loot boxes in its age rating questionnaire to an 18+ rating in Brazil.

In the United States, the rollout follows a state-based schedule. Utah requires age verification for new Apple Accounts starting May 6, while Louisiana follows on July 1. In both states, developers can request age categories through the updated API. Apple says the tool helps developers identify when age-related rules apply and when they must request parental approval for major updates.

These changes show Apple tightening control over adult content while giving developers clearer signals to stay compliant.
