Apple Discontinues Pro Display XDR After Six Years

Apple has discontinued the Pro Display XDR, ending a six year run for its most expensive external display that first launched in 2019 alongside the Mac Pro. The company has now replaced it with the new Studio Display XDR, which costs far less and adds several modern features that the older model never offered.

The Pro Display XDR started at $5,999, while Apple sold the Pro Stand separately for another $1,000. It remained Apple’s only external display until the original Studio Display arrived in 2022. Now, Apple has refreshed its display lineup and removed the 32 inch Pro Display XDR from sale.

In a newsroom announcement, Apple introduced the new Studio Display family and confirmed the launch of Studio Display XDR.

“Studio Display XDR is a huge leap forward for XDR technology, with a mini-LED backlight, 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, advanced color accuracy, and a 120Hz refresh rate, transforming workflows like filmmaking, design and print, and 3D animation,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

Studio Display XDR replaces Pro Display XDR

The new Studio Display XDR features a 27 inch 5K Retina XDR panel with mini LED backlighting and more than 2,000 local dimming zones. It delivers up to 1000 nits of SDR brightness and 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, along with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Apple also added a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync for smoother motion.

Unlike the Pro Display XDR, the new model includes built in hardware:

  • 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View
  • Three microphone array
  • Six speaker system with Spatial Audio
  • Thunderbolt 5 connectivity
  • Two additional USB C ports
  • Up to 140W charging support

The Studio Display XDR starts at $3,299 and includes a tilt and height adjustable stand. Buyers can choose standard or nano texture glass.

Studio Display lineup expands

Apple also updated the regular Studio Display, which now features Thunderbolt 5 and improved audio and camera performance. The base Studio Display starts at $1,599.

Meanwhile, the Mac Pro remains available with the M2 Ultra chip starting at $6,999. With the Pro Display XDR gone, Apple’s display strategy now centers on the Studio Display family for both everyday users and professional workflows.
