AirPods Max 2 Points to iOS 26.4 Release Timing

Apple Releases Revised iOS 26.4 Beta 3 Build for iPhone

Apple recently revealed the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2. While audio enthusiasts are already dissecting the hardware upgrades, eagle-eyed observers noticed a crucial detail buried in the fine print. To access all the new features on these headphones, users will need their devices running iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, or macOS Tahoe 26.4.

The timeline points to early April

Apple confirmed that preorders for the AirPods Max 2 begin on Wednesday, March 25, with an official launch slated for early April. Because the headphones rely on iOS 26.4 to power features like Live Translation, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and new Digital Crown controls, the software update must arrive around the same time.

This means iPhone users across the USA can expect iOS 26.4 to drop by the first week of April, though a late March release is also entirely possible. Apple is currently on the fourth beta of the software, suggesting the final release candidate is just around the corner.

It is highly likely Apple held back the final testing version until now, specifically to keep the AirPods Max 2 mentions hidden from developers.

What to expect from the iOS 26.4 update

When iOS 26.4 finally arrives on your phone, you will see a few subtle but useful changes. The fourth beta has already revealed a fresh batch of emoji, including a trombone, a treasure chest, a landslide, and new customization options for existing characters like gender-neutral ballet dancers.

Apple has also refined its accessibility options by renaming “Reduce Highlighting Effects” to “Reduce Bright Effects,” which helps minimize strong visual flashes when interacting with on-screen buttons.

Interestingly, the beta removed the RCS end-to-end encryption testing that appeared in earlier builds, confirming that fully encrypted cross-platform messaging will not be part of the final 26.4 release. Finally, the update will officially add software support for Apple’s newly announced hardware, including the iPhone 17e.
