Apple Introduces AirPods Max 2 with H2 Chip and Better ANC

AirPods Max 2

Apple announced the AirPods Max 2 today, bringing a necessary internal overhaul to its premium over-ear headphones. The second-generation model keeps the familiar aluminum and mesh design but replaces the older internals with the H2 processor. This upgrade introduces modern audio features recently added to the smaller AirPods Pro lineup, including enhanced Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, and Live Translation.

The H2 chip and intelligent audio features

The H2 chip drives the core updates in this new generation. This processor uses computational audio algorithms to process sound based on your immediate environment. Powered in part by Apple Intelligence, the chip enables Live Translation to help users communicate across different languages in person. Conversation Awareness is another highly requested addition. This feature automatically lowers media volume and reduces background noise when the headphones detect the wearer speaking to someone nearby.

Upgraded noise cancellation and sound quality

Active Noise Cancellation gets a measurable upgrade in the AirPods Max 2. Apple notes the new hardware delivers up to 1.5 times more effective noise cancellation than the original model. This improvement specifically targets persistent low-frequency sounds like airplane engines or commuter trains. The H2 chip also works with the acoustic hardware to provide cleaner audio and richer detail. Listeners can still use Personalized Spatial Audio, which relies on dynamic head tracking to create an accurate surround sound profile tailored to the user.

Audio tools for creators

Apple added specific features aimed at podcasters, musicians, and video creators. The headphones now support high-quality audio recording even in noisy environments. A Voice Isolation feature uses beamforming microphones to separate the user’s voice from loud surrounding background noise. A new camera remote function also lets creators start and stop video recordings on a connected iPhone or iPad directly from the physical controls on the headphones.

Pricing, colors, and release date

The AirPods Max 2 keep their original retail price of $549 in the US. The updated color lineup includes midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue. Pre-orders open on March 25, and the headphones will begin arriving in stores in early April. Apple fans are now looking forward to the AirPods Ultra, which are due later this year.
