Apple Names Three New Engineering VPs as Hardware Division Undergoes Changes

Apple is making another round of leadership changes in its hardware division, with two longtime display executives moving closer to retirement and several engineering leaders receiving promotions. The changes come as CEO John Ternus and Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji continue reorganizing the teams responsible for developing Apple’s devices.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the latest moves follow a broader restructuring that combined Apple’s hardware engineering and hardware technologies organizations under Srouji. As we previously covered, the company has also reduced management positions to simplify decision-making across its engineering teams.

Apple’s Longtime Display Executives Prepare to Retire

Wei Chen and John Zhong, two senior executives who have spent roughly three decades at Apple, are gradually stepping away from their leadership responsibilities.

Both executives are moving into smaller advisory roles as part of a transition that has been underway for several years. Victor Yin, whom Chen and Zhong have mentored, already oversees much of Apple’s display engineering work.

The transition affects an important part of Apple’s hardware development, particularly as the company expands its use of OLED displays across products.

Apple Promotes Three Engineering Executives to VP Roles

Apple has also named three new engineering vice presidents during its regular October promotion cycle. All three work on technologies that help Apple devices connect to wireless networks and the internet.

The newly promoted executives include:

  • Rajesh Ambati: Promoted to vice president in engineering, with responsibilities involving connectivity technologies.
  • Louie Sanguinetti: A longtime Apple employee who has played an important role in wireless hardware development.
  • Derek Shaeffer: Promoted to vice president for engineering work related to device connectivity.

The promotions strengthen the leadership structure around wireless technology, an increasingly important area as Apple develops more of the hardware and software used to connect its devices.

Apple has also promoted Carson Oliver to vice president overseeing the App Store, while Steve Smith has taken charge of corporate development.

Ternus and Srouji Continue Reshaping Apple’s Hardware Teams

The latest changes follow Srouji’s earlier hardware reorganization, which brought chip development and device engineering under a more closely coordinated leadership structure.

Ternus has also taken a more direct role in product development, with Apple’s design teams now reporting directly to the CEO.

Together, the changes give newer engineering leaders greater responsibility while experienced executives gradually leave their existing positions.

Apple has not publicly announced retirement dates for Chen or Zhong, and the company has not detailed how the latest promotions will change its product development plans.
