Google is finally bringing one of its most useful translation tools to the iPhone. The company announced that the live translate feature for headphones is now officially available on iOS. This tool essentially turns any standard pair of headphones into a personal interpreter. Instead of staring at a screen to read translated text, you can now hear conversations translated in real time right in your ears.
Google Live Translate via headphones now works on iOS devices
The feature previously worked only on Android devices, but now Apple users get to join in. To try it out, you just need to open the Google Translate app on your phone, connect your headphones, and tap the live translate button. When someone speaks to you in a foreign language, the app processes the audio and plays the translated speech directly through your earbuds. It currently supports more than seventy different languages.
Google also programmed the tool to maintain the tone and rhythm of the original speaker. This means you do not just get a flat, robotic voice reading words back to you. You actually hear the natural emotion and vibe of the person talking.
The feature is expanding to more regions around the world
Along with the iOS release, Google is expanding this feature to more regions for both Android and iPhone users. The tool is now rolling out to people in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. This update makes Google a strong competitor against expensive, specialized translation earbuds that cost hundreds of dollars.
Because the software works with the headphones you already own and relies on a free app, it completely lowers the barrier for travelers, medical workers, and business professionals who need to communicate across language barriers.
