iOS 27 Will Let Users Pick Gemini, Claude, and Other AI Services for Apple Intelligence

iOS 27 Brings 4 New Features Beyond Siri That You Should Know

Apple plans to make iOS 27 a much more open AI update by letting users choose third-party AI services for Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. The change would move Apple beyond its current ChatGPT fallback and give iPhone, iPad, and Mac users more control over which AI model handles text, image, and voice-based tasks.

Bloomberg reports that Apple calls this new system “Extensions” in test versions of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The feature will allow installed AI apps to plug into Apple Intelligence when users ask for help inside supported Apple features.

“Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more,” according to a message shown in test versions of the software.

That wording matters because Apple is not just adding another chatbot button. It is building a system where apps from companies like Google and Anthropic can support Apple Intelligence directly, as long as they add support through their App Store apps. In simple terms, a user with the Gemini or Claude app installed could choose that model for certain Apple Intelligence tasks instead of relying only on Apple’s own system or ChatGPT.

This also lines up with Apple’s reported deal with Google to use a Gemini-based model for Siri and Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27. However, the wider “Extensions” system gives users a separate choice by allowing them to pick supported third-party AI services themselves.

Apple also plans to make Siri responses clearer by letting users choose different voices for external AI models. Siri could use one voice for Apple’s own responses, while Claude, Gemini, or another supported model could use a different voice when it answers.

For users, the practical benefit is control. If someone prefers Claude for writing, Gemini for search-style answers, or ChatGPT for general tasks, iOS 27 will make that choice feel more built into the system. WWDC begins on June 8, where Apple is expected to introduce iOS 27 and explain how this new AI app integration works.
