If you are a developer and you want to offer a fixed-odds betting app to users in Brazil, you now have a few extra steps to clear with Apple. The company recently updated its rules to align with new regulations in the country. Now, the company demands that developers secure and submit a valid government license before it allows these types of applications to go live on the App Store.
The shift forces creators to jump through a specific set of hoops to keep their software available to the public.
Creators must submit fresh app versions to prove legal compliance
To meet the new standard, developers need a license from Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Bets. The agency outlines its exact function online.
According to the SPA’s website:
“The Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) is the body within the Ministry of Finance responsible for fixed-odds betting, commercial promotions, philanthropic sweepstakes, lotteries, and the advance collection of popular savings. Its role is to authorize, grant, regulate, establish rules, monitor, supervise, inspect, and sanction companies in the sector, in accordance with current legislation.”
Any app that offers these features must say yes to the gambling question during the age rating process. Doing so automatically applies an A18 age rating on the software in Brazil.
Just updating the background information on an existing app will not trigger a review. Developers must submit a completely new version of the app to start the check. During this process, they must put their license details in the notes section and attach any needed documents directly to the review portal.
Apple has explained the licensing process:
“A new app version must be submitted to initiate the license verification process. Updating the App Review Information section in App Store Connect alone won’t start a review. When submitting a new version of your app for review: 1) Include your license information in the App Review Information section in App Store Connect, 2) Enter your license details in the Notes field, 3) Attach any supporting documents using the file attachment field.”
Beyond getting the age rating right, the software must also comply with all local laws regarding warnings. This includes showing clear alerts about the risks of gambling. The rules aim to keep things clear and protect users.
Ultimately, developers who want to stay active in this market must gather their paperwork and follow the new guidelines to keep their apps online.
