Apple introduced its new Digital ID feature in the Wallet app last fall as part of its broader push toward digital identity on iPhone, and now the feature has started expanding beyond airport security checkpoints with support for age verification inside Apple services.
Digital ID first launched as an alternative to state-issued digital driver’s licenses, which have seen a slow rollout across the United States because only a limited number of states currently support the feature in Apple Wallet. To solve that problem, Apple created a system that lets users build a Digital ID using their U.S. passport directly on iPhone.
Apple says Digital ID offers a secure and private way to verify identity using an iPhone or Apple Watch without handing over more personal information than necessary.
Digital ID now supports age verification
At launch, Apple mainly focused on travel use cases, and the feature became accepted at TSA security checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel. Apple also said additional support for identity and age verification would arrive later.
Now, that expansion has officially started.
Apple recently updated a support document explaining that Digital ID in Apple Wallet can now verify whether a user is an adult when using certain Apple services. Users can see these prompts while creating a new Apple Account, updating software, changing specific safety settings, or downloading apps with an 18+ age rating.
How to use Digital ID on iPhone
- Open the Wallet app on iPhone
- Add a Digital ID using a valid U.S. passport
- Follow Apple’s verification process
- Use Face ID or Touch ID when prompted for verification
- Present the Digital ID when Apple requests age confirmation
Apple’s latest update gives users another private way to confirm their age without sharing a physical ID or more sensitive personal details.
