Apple Wallet Digital ID Just Took Its First Step Toward Becoming a True Digital Passport Alternative

Apple Wallet’s Digital ID feature just became more useful for iPhone users, as Apple now officially allows it for age verification across select Apple services and account-related actions. This marks one of the first major expansions for the feature since its launch in iOS 26, giving users another practical reason to set up Digital ID beyond airport security.

Last year, Apple introduced Digital ID as an alternative to state-issued digital driver’s licenses, which have rolled out slowly across the US. Instead of waiting for state partnerships, Apple created a system that lets eligible users build a secure digital identity in Wallet using their US passport.

At launch, Apple focused on TSA checkpoint support, allowing users to present Digital ID at more than 250 US airports for domestic travel.

Now, Apple is expanding that vision.

Apple Digital ID now supports age verification

Apple’s updated support documentation confirms that Digital ID can officially verify adulthood when users create new Apple Accounts, update device software, adjust certain safety settings, or download apps rated 18+.

Apple explained:

“A Digital ID in Apple Wallet created using a U.S. passport can be used to confirm that you’re an adult.”

This gives users a more private option compared to submitting physical IDs or credit card details, especially as age verification laws continue expanding in multiple countries and regions.

How to use Digital ID for Apple age verification

If Apple asks you to confirm your age, follow these steps:

  • Open the verification prompt on your iPhone or iPad
  • Choose the approved verification method
  • Select Digital ID from Apple Wallet if available
  • Authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID
  • Complete the verification process

Apple also notes that Digital ID avoids storing unnecessary sensitive information unless users choose to save it for other services.

This change positions Apple Wallet as more than a travel tool, gradually turning it into a broader digital identity platform for both online and in-person verification. As regulations around online safety and adult verification continue growing, Apple’s “secure and private” Digital ID system gives users a streamlined option that reduces friction while protecting personal data.

For now, adoption remains early, but Apple’s latest move strongly suggests Digital ID will continue expanding into more services, apps, and businesses over time.
