Apple Brings Passport-Based Digital ID to iPhone and Apple Watch

Apple Rolls Out Digital ID for iPhone Users Based on US Passports

Apple has launched its new Digital ID feature in the Wallet app for users in the United States. First announced at WWDC, the feature is now rolling out to everyone with a valid U.S. passport. You can use it to store and present your verified identity securely on your iPhone or Apple Watch.

The Digital ID setup uses your passport as the base document for verification. You can create it directly from the Wallet app on iPhone, and the entire process happens privately and securely on your device. Apple says all data stays encrypted, and even the company cannot see where or when you use your ID.

How to Set Up Digital ID Using Your Passport

Creating a Digital ID in Wallet is similar to adding a driver’s license or state ID.

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Add (+) button in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose “Driver’s License or ID Cards.”
  4. Select “Digital ID” and follow the on-screen steps.

You’ll need to scan your U.S. passport and use your iPhone to read the chip on its back for verification. The setup also includes taking a selfie and performing head movements to confirm your identity. Once verified, your Digital ID appears in Wallet within minutes.

Apple says this process is secure and private. Your passport data stays on your device, protected by Face ID or Touch ID. When you use your Digital ID, you only share the information required for that transaction, such as your age or name, not your full address or physical traits.

Where You Can Use Digital ID

You can currently use your Digital ID at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 airports in the United States. It works for domestic flights only, not for international travel or border crossings. To present it, double-click the iPhone’s side or Home button, select Digital ID, hold your device near the reader, and authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID.

Apple said the feature is in public beta and will expand to more locations and use cases over time. In the future, you’ll be able to use your Digital ID for age or identity verification at select stores, online platforms, and apps like Uber Eats for alcohol delivery.

Requirements for Digital ID in Wallet

  • An iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1 or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 26.1.
  • Face ID or Touch ID and Bluetooth enabled.
  • A valid, unexpired U.S. passport.
  • Your Apple Account with two-factor authentication turned on.
  • Your device region set to the United States.

More Privacy, Less Exposure

Apple highlights that Digital ID minimizes unnecessary data sharing. Unlike physical IDs, where others can see your address or personal details, Wallet’s Digital ID only shows the information needed for verification. You don’t need to hand over your iPhone or unlock it to present your ID.

Apple says the feature builds on its earlier driver’s license integration, currently available in 12 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. With Digital ID, any passport holder in the United States can now create and use a verified ID in Wallet.
