Apple Drops New AirPods Public Beta Just One Day After iOS 27

Apple just rolled out the very first public beta for its wireless earbuds. This new software arrives just one day after the company released the public test versions for its major phone and computer updates. If you want to try out fresh audio features like custom equalizer controls and new fitness tracking options before they officially launch this fall, you can now opt into the testing program.

See which earbud models support the new software update

To test out the new firmware, you need to own one of the newer audio products from the company. The tech giant limited this beta phase to specific models that have the processing power to handle the latest additions. For example, the new software brings advanced GymKit support that lets specific models sync heart rate data directly during a workout.

Here is the full list of supported models for this test:

  • AirPods 4
  • AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
  • AirPods Pro 2 (Lightning and USB-C)
  • AirPods Pro 3
  • AirPods Max 2

If you have older versions of the AirPods, you will have to wait for future hardware upgrades to try these features.

Follow these steps to install the beta firmware on your device

Before you start, you must install the iOS 27 beta, the iPadOS 27 beta, or the macOS 27 beta on your main device. Without the phone or computer running the test software, the earbud update will not show up.

Once your main device is ready, connect your earbuds via Bluetooth. Open the Settings app on your phone and head to the Bluetooth menu. Tap the small information icon next to your connected earbuds. Scroll down to the bottom of that page until you find the beta updates section. Toggle that switch on.

After you flip the switch, the software will automatically download and install in the background. Your earbuds need to be inside their charging case and sitting right next to your phone or computer for the process to finish.
