Apple Vision Pro Speeds Up Surgery by Almost 20 Percent

Surgeons are finding a great use for the Apple Vision Pro headset, and it involves bringing the screen directly to their eyes in the operating room. A new peer-reviewed study from UC San Diego reveals that doctors using the mixed reality headset finished their procedures 19 percent faster than those relying on traditional monitors. The data highlights a surprising benefit for the device in high-stakes medical settings.

Wearing the headset improves surgeon posture and saves hospital money

The study published in AJO International looked at 32 procedures meant to clear blocked tear ducts. Instead of looking at a big monitor parked across the room, surgeons wore the Vision Pro headset. This setup streamed a live video feed right into their line of sight.

By keeping the display in front of them, doctors could keep a normal, forward-facing posture while working. They no longer had to twist their necks to see a screen off to the side. All five surgeons in the trial felt less physical and mental strain, and they all preferred the headset over standard monitors.

Operating times dropped from an average of 42.7 minutes using normal screens to 34.4 minutes with the headset. Better yet, every single case succeeded without any complications. The operating system, visionOS, handled the live video feed smoothly enough for delicate medical work.

Cost and space play a big part here too. Analyst Horace Dediu pointed out that the headset costs less than one percent of a normal operating room visualization system. It also takes up way less floor space, which is a major win in crowded medical rooms.

This is just one early study, but it points to a very real benefit for hospitals. Medical centers might soon see the high retail price of the headset as a cheap option compared to standard medical equipment, as long as larger trials back up these early numbers.
